April 1, 2004
Dear ABD Survival Guide Reader,
Thanks for all your words of encouragement
and support for our last issue; we do read
(and value!) your feedback. I'm glad to know
that the Guide continues to be such a valuable
resource for so many of you.We received several requests for part two
of this issue's feature article, so I'm
pleased to present more tips from Dr. Barbara
Kee on how to make the literature review process
easier to complete. For those who could use a bit of "been there, done
that" input- check out our Words of Wisdom section. And, remember, as our inspirational quote suggests,
obstacles needn't stop us- but, instead, can
challenge us to find another way around, out, or
through.Keep up the great work and see you in two weeks.
Warmly,
Ben

Literature Review Made Simple, Part 2
By Barbara A. Kee, Ph.D.
=====================================To think simply about the dissertation process may be a
new concept for you. You have spent years dreading the
monster that is your thesis or dissertation. Professors
have given you comforting words, such as, "This will be
the most difficult task of your life." Evidently, they
have never had a baby.Does it have to be so difficult? Not if you can plan
your work and begin early. A good place to begin is
with the literature review. A simple technique will
make the process of writing your literature review much
easier.First, I recommend to all my dissertation-coaching
clients that they make a list of connecting words and
phrases to aid in interweaving the different articles.
What do I mean by that and how do you get a list
started? When you begin your first course in your degree
program, start spending time at the library looking at
theses and dissertations. There is a wealth of knowledge
about the dissertation process to to be found in these
volumes. Examine ones that are in your area of study
and especially ones that had your committee members as
a part of the committee for that dissertation.Go to the literature review section of the dissertation
and as you read the material make a list of the
connecting phrases and words that was used. For example,
see if you can pick out the connecting terms in the
following excerpts: Brown (1973) a few years earlier
commented....Erikson and Jung first began to write...
(1960). Jones (1935) constructed a theory.... Like Jones,
she examined the role of.... Additionally.... These
figures highlight.... This research was consistent
with.... Similarly, Brown and Smith (2003) evaluated....
Results indicated....The connecting words and phrases are commented; first
began to write; constructed; like; according to;
additionally; this research; Similarly; and results
indicated. As you are writing your literature review it can get
confusing and seem repetitious. Of course, you can
write your literature review on the fly with connecting
phrases as they come to mind. If you are an experienced
writer, this may be easy, but most of us have to work
at writing a clear concise document.Having a list ofconnecting phrases and words to consult
as you work can make it a bit easier. As you get into
the midst of your literature review it will begin to
flow as you are more aware of ways to express
the information. The dissertation process is
challenging enough and starting early to prepare can
make it a little easier.=======================================
